Breast Cancer : Visualize your breast as the face of a clock

Visualize your breast as the face of a clock!

• Place your left hand behind your head and examine your left breast with your right hand.
• Place your right hand at 12 o’clock – at the very top of your breast.
• Press the pads of your three middle fingers firmly on your breast in a slight circling, massaging motion.
• Move your hand down to 1 o’clock, then 2 o’clock, continuing until you return to 12 o’clock.
• Continue in the same pattern, moving your hand in smaller circles towards your nipple.
• Check the tissue under the nipple and look for discharge.
• Check the tissue under your armpit and surrounding your breast.
• Place your right hand behind your head and repeat the examination on your right breast using your left hand.

Benefits of breast familiarity:

When you know the normal feel of your breasts, it’s easier to notice subtle but potentially serious changes. These changes may become apparent quickly, over the course of just a few months. Although most breast abnormalities discovered on breast self-exams aren’t cancers, a small proportion are.

Some of those cancers are at an early stage, when prompt treatment can be lifesaving. That’s why regular breast self-exams – examining your breasts in way that is comfortable to you – are particularly important if you are at increased risk of breast cancer. To gain the greatest benefit from regular breast self-exams, ask your doctor to review your technique at your next checkup. Do you wonder when to self examine breast?

The American Cancer Society recommends that doctors should inform women about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exams when they reach the age of 20. That’s the age you should begin breast self-exams. Whether or not you perform breast self-exams, you should have a clinical breast exam by a health professional every three years until you are 40. After age 40, schedule a clinical breast exam and mammoge: am every two year.

The best time to perform a breast self-exam is about a week after the start of your period. That’s when your breasts are least likely to bet tender or swollen.

Your breast tissue undergoes changes each month during your menstrual cycle. Changes in hormone levels associated with menstruation cause your breasts to swell. Once your period starts, the swelling subsides and your breasts return to normal. During pregnancy and nursing, you breasts may feel more lumpy than usual.

If you have any questions about how your breasts look or feel, do not hesitate to ask your doctor about them.

Good to remember:

One benefit of breast self-exams is the potential to identify and treat a cancerous breast lump while it’s still small and in an early stage of development. On the flip side, however, you might need a biopsy to evaluate an area of concern. If the biopsy results are non-cancerous (benign), you might feel that you have undergone in invasive procedure unnecessarily. Breast self-exams may also be challenging if you have normally lumpy (fibrocystic) breasts.

Breast self-exams alone don’t reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer. Breast self-exams can miss tumor, as can other methods of screening. That’s why it’s important to rely on more than one method to screen for breast cancer.

A combined approach to breast cancer screening – including breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, mammography and magnetic resonance imagine (MRI) for certain high risk women – increases your chances of finding breast cancer at an early, treatable stage.

Breast Cancer – Just Bare It!

Kylie Minogue suffered from it. Shaft star Richard Roundtree is the proof that breast cancer can affect men too. Recent data shows breast cancer to be the commonest cancer to affect Indian Women. Just look at here for advises on preventive measures that help you to check out the situations.

Breast cancer is one of the commonest cancers affecting females. The peak incidence of the disease is seen in the fifth and sixth decades. But in India women in forties are affected with the disease, probably because of shorter longevity in Indian females. It is important to keep yourself aware of the symptoms and causes that could lead to breast cancer, which if not detected well in time, could even prove fatal.

Symptoms:

Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain. In fact, when it first develops, breast caner may cause no symptoms at all. But as the cancer grows, it can cause these changes.

• A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
• Change in the size or shape of the breast
• Discharge from the nipple
• Change in the colour or texture of the skin of the breast or areola (such as dimpling, puckling, or sealiness)

Causes:

No one knows exactly why a normal breast cell becomes a cancerous one and there is probably no single cause.

It is thought, however, that breast cancer results from a combination of risk factors. Talk to your doctor or other health care professional about caner prevention methods that might help you.

Go for Self-Exam:

• Start by looking closely at your breasts. Disrobe and stand in front of mirror with your arms at your sides. While facing forward and turning from side to side, look for puckering, dimpling or changes in size, shape or symmetry.

• Check to see if your nipples are turned in (inverted). Inspect your breasts with your arms in two other position: hands on your hips and hands raised overhead, palms pressed together.

• Perform the manual part of the exam in the shower or lying down with no shirt of bra on. If you choose the shower, lather your fingers and breasts with soap to help your fingers glide more smoothly over your wet skin. If you do the exam lying down, choose a bed or other flat surface to lie on.

• Move your hand over your breast using one of three techniques: the clock pattern or the wedge pattern. No matter which method you choose, be sure to check your nipple for any discharge. Do this by gently pinching the nipple with your fingers positioned at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock.

• Touching or gently pressing a breast lump may cause some discomfort. If you do detect any changes, such as a lump, thickening, asymmetry, dimpling, redness, nipple discharge or nipple inversion, see your doctor promptly.

Running to Stand Still

Technology has changed the way we live our lives. But instead of making it easy we find ourselves trying to keep in step with technology. As a result we find ourselves constantly on the turn to catch up. With what?

The moment the email takes more than 30 seconds to deliver, we start fuming, cursing the server, the service provider. However, there was a time, not very long ago, when it took 20 minutes to get connected to the net.

Times have changed as most of our routine activities are done in minutes or seconds. We no longer stand in a queue to withdraw money as we have ATMs and online banking. We can spare ourselves from the drudgery of cooking and cleaning up as we have instant food. Home deliveries and microwave; sleeplessness doesn’t bother us for long as we have sleeping pills and more such pills to solve our other problems; we have cell phones to call anywhere in the world; we read the newspapers online look up for words in online dictionaries. Technology has definitely saved so much of time.

However, one wonders with all the time saved owing to technological advancement, has it really slowed down our lives? Rather, the city dweller, surrounded by gadgets, has started imitating the pace at which the technology works. The modern man wants instant gratification. Under the sheer pressure to do more things and quicker, man has sped up the pace of life. He tries to fit in all his activities into twenty-four hours a day and compromises on his sleep. There is no time to relax. Every task is done hurriedly. And people’s mode of entertainment has become restricted to sitting in front of the TV, surfing on internet, messaging on cell phone, watching movies and eating out.

American poet William Davie’s poem “Leisure” aptly describes the lifestyle of city dwellers.

What is this life if, full of core,
We have no time to stand and stare,
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows
When self-worth is measured by not looking inward but at friends, friend’s friend, colleagues and neighbours, we rarely settle for what is good for us. One wants to achieve more and more irrespective of whether one needs it and can achieve it. We want to take up all the responsibilities and worries on our shoulders. Do you remember the last time you put all your worries to God? Important factor is to enjoy what we do. If one enjoys working 12 hours a day or commuting four hours a day or working seven days a week, it’s fine. But, the moment we try to make ourselves adjust to something we have doing, it starts taking a roll on our emotional, mental and physical health. In my previous workplace, there were two managers. Their workload and work pressure were almost same. However, I always saw a getting restless, lighting up and screaming. I rarely saw her smiling. Contrarily, I always saw a smile on B’s face. A would spend most of the time yelling at her team members and B would discuss things with her team members in a friendly manner.

Keep Table Manners While Washing Your Hands

At restaurant, after dinner or lunch you have provided hand bowls for washing your hands. But many times we have forgotten the table manners. Many peoples never remember that there are some table manners are still available at the place. Let us move with me to know the special system, how to use hand bowls.

01. Do not pour all the fingers in the hand bowl.

02. Hand washing means not to rub the lemon or lemon extracts and spread the water on the table cover. Due to this stupid behavior you are going show your etiquette in wrong manner to the person who is sitting just opposite to you.

03. After take out your hands form bowl never wash your lips (mouth) with the same hands or do not blow out your hands along with the water and spread out the drops on the table.

04. Just push wet hands on paper napkin lightly. If you feel that you have never cleared your hands with the available water inside the bowl then move towards wash basin and by applying wash soap or washing liquid get your hand cleared.

05. If you feel that the water inside the bowl is too hot then just waits to get it ambient.

I think all these tips worth to save one’s etiquette and even a good personality.

How to make pure KAJAL

It is best to use Ayurvedic medicinal kajal, made by the following procedure. For preparation, one needs silver or copper plates and lamps, pure cow’s ghee or castor oil and good quality camphor (like bhimseni camphor). A layer of soot is formed on the under surface of the silver/copper plate by holding the plate just above the flame of the silver ghee or castor oil lamp. Slowly remove and collect this soot layer, add a little ghee or butter along with bhimseni camphor and mix properly with a mortar and pestle to form a fine paste i.e., KAJAL.

Applying kajal prepared in the above manner regularly helps to keep the eyes healthy and shining. To make it more potent and beneficial, one can add Triphala ghruta, pure bees wax and pearl ash in the above kajal formulation.

Kajal may prove to be extremely useful to those working on computers day in and day out. The only disadvantage being the black Colour it gives to the eyes. The solution for them is colorless kajal (which is especially popular with men) – that a paste made using all the medicinal ingredients excluding the black soot or anjan and applying it in the eyes.

A very simple but effective exercise is to take cold water into the mouth, blow out the full cheeks and sprinkle cold water on the eyes with the hands. This treatment can be used two or three times a day, practiced over a longer period, brings wonderful results. Whilst keeping the eyes open, rotate the eyeballs. This can be done several times a day.

A Sip of Coffee : To Coffee or Not!

Whether you are hooked on caffeine or not, if you need a boost, coffee improves your mental alertness and can have a claiming affect on your heart rate,” says Michael Kennedy, a professor at the University of Alberta.

Kennedy, the co-author of a new study that proved his point, said: “In addition, one large coffee has more than enough caffeine to see these changes”.

Kennedy and his team looked at how 10 women who drank coffee daily and 10 other women who drank less than two servings per week were affected, by measuring heart rate, blood pressure, alertness and ability to perform a tough mental test after consuming a 350-ml sized coffee. The study subjects were aged 18 to 37.

In the study, after eating a normal breakfast, participants were approximately 140 ml of caffeine. After allowing 50 minutes for its absorption, participants in both groups were required to complete two word tasks. Heart rate, blood pressure (BP) and alertness were monitored before and after the rest.

Of some concern, noted Kennedy, is that baseline BP taken before the groups digested the caffeine was significantly higher in the habituated coffee drinkers. “This indicates that there may be some long-term cardiovascular adjustment to digesting caffeine on a daily basis,” said Kennedy, adding that thought the sample was small; the results were statically and clinically significant.

“For people at risk for high BP, if you are a habituated coffee drinker, reducing your caffeine intake would be an effective way of potentially reducing your blood pressure.”

So, I think one sip of coffee save more than this what all you have read here.

A House Built On Rock

To build anything lasting one must lay a strong foundation. For an energetic, flexible body it is essential to have healthy, well lubricated joints. Tense muscles and stiff joints are like rusty unused hinges – creaking, hurting. This is indicative of blocked energy due to long, hours at the computer, bad posture, and imbalanced lifestyle, psychological and emotional problems.

Now I am presenting here with one of the special contributions of the Bihar School of Yoga (biharyoga.net) that will address all of these problems. A series of simple movements that remove existing energy blocks and promote the free flow of energy in the body and mind, it is best that these are practiced in the given sequence. For lack of space if only a few movements are featured here, be patient, use these as an add-on your on going practice and continue to watch this space for the rest of this magical series!

Who are these meant for?

• All those who wish to lay a foundation for further yoga practice.
• For those with rheumatism, arthritis, heart problems.
• Convalescents wishing to build up physical and mental strength.
• For aching legs, computer fatigued arms, shoulders, necks.
• Nervous systems strained to screaming point.

Just take a look at following Yoga Video of Shri. Ramdevji Maharaj especially made for women.

Prarambhik Stithi:

• Sit on a mat with your legs outstretched.
• Place your palms on the floor behind your buttocks comfortably far enough so you can support your body.
• Keep the elbows, back, head and neck straight.
• Lean back slightly, close the eyes and practice body index.

Padanguli Naman / Toe Bending: 10 times:

• Focus attention on your toes. Keep the soles of your feet straight and try not to let them move.
• As you inhale curl and clench the toes tightly.
• As you exhale stretch and move the toes towards yourself.
• Pay special attention to soles remaining straight and the ankles remaining motionless.

Goolf Naman / Ankle Bending: 10 times.

• Now move your focus to the ankle joints – the feet are moved back and forth, bending them from the ankles, not the toes. Keeping the heels on the floor throughout.
• Inhaling stretch the feet forwards as if to touch the floor.
• Exhaling flex the feet – pushing the heels out.

Goolf Chakra / Ankle rotation: 10 times.

• Keeping the heels on the ground throughout, slowly rotate the right foot clockwise from the ankle ten times.
• Repeat the movement anti-clockwise with the same foot ten times.
• Repeat sequence with the left foot.
• When pressed for time you may practice with both feet together.
• For upward half of the circle breathe in, downward half breathe out.

NOTE: do not let your knees move and observe the difference this makes to your ankles.

Janu Naman / Knee bending: 5-10 times each leg

• This is best practiced in the base position.
• Bend the right leg, clasp the hands under the thigh or knee.
• Inhaling, straighten leg, pulling up the kneecap. Do not allow the foot to touch the floor.
• Exhaling, bend the right knee again bringing the thigh as close to the chest as possible.
• Try to keep the back and the spine as straight as possible. This is one round.
• Practice the number of rounds you have decided upon, and then repeat the sequence with the left leg.

Janu Chakra / Knee rotation: 3-5 times each leg

• Sitting in the base position, clasp your right thigh tightly to your chest.
• Move the lower leg from the knee in a large circle, trying to straighten the leg at the tip of the upward movement.
• Breathe in going up, breathe out coming down.
• Try to keep the thigh and the trunk completely still.
• After the decided number of rounds with right leg, close your eyes, see how your knee feels, then practice with your left leg.

NOTE: Imagine a clock in front of you as you carefully move your leg around it.

Ardha Titali / Half Butterfly: 10 times each leg

• Sitting in the base position, place the right foot high on your left thigh.
• Place the right hand on the bent right knee, with the left hand hold the toes.
• While breathing in, gently bring the knee towards the chest.
• While breathing out, push the knee down, trying to touch the knee to the floor.
• Do not let the trunk move, The leg muscles should be passive, all exertion being done by the arm.

NOTE: Upon finishing, carefully straighten the leg, bend it once and straighten it again. This is important as it will ensure that the knee joint is aligned correctly.

As you practice be aware of Level 1:

• The interaction between the bones, muscles and joints.
• The sensations of stretching and relaxation – the pleasure, the difficulty if any.
• Mental counting of each completed round.
• The thoughts that arise in the mind as you practice.

Level 2:

To the awareness of the physical movement:

• Add the dimension of breath.
• Synchronize the individual movement with the in and the out breath as instructed. The movements then become slower which, in turn slows the brain waves inducing relaxation and harmony.

Learn to Breathe Correctly:

• Always breath through the nostrils, not the mouth.
• The natural pattern of breathing is wavelike, using both the chest and the lower abdomen. Observe a sleeping baby!
• Breathe into the chest first, normally, effortlessly, and then let the breath further descend into the lower abdomen, letting it rise gently.
• To breathe out, allow the abdomen to go in, pulling the muscles gently in and up to let the wave return to the chest and out through the nose.
• Do not force the breath making it longer and deeper than usual. Be patient.
• Follow the instructions using your normal breath and you soon begin to notice a difference.
• To make all of this easier you can imagine the breath as a wave of the sea reaching the shore of your lower abdomen and then returning through your nostrils to rejoin the ocean.
If you have a problem sleeping use the above visualization in bed letting the rhythm rock you to sleep!

At the end of your asana practice lie down, relax, practice the body index. Then do the above for 10-20 breaths as time permits.
